RESERVOIR STAR PARTY Activities There
are many organized activities at the Prineville Reservoir Star Party
including kayaking, nature hikes, talks, a constellation tour, air
rocket building, and just plain discovery. There will be a
representative from John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
Viewing the sun through specially designed telescopes will be another
focus during the day on Saturday as well.
All attendees of the talks will have a chance to win door prizes donated by a variety of people and vendors. The grand prize is a telescope that is more than useful for viewing the night sky. The Prineville Reservoir is a popular fishing area and fishing from the bank and on boats (sorry, you have to bring your own) is almost guaranteed to be fun-filled. Unsupervised swimming in the State Park's swimming area is a favorite as well. The entire area around the Reservoir is a geological treasure and hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing is rewarding. There are supervised and unsupervised activities for youngsters all day long. The hightlight for the kids is building and launching an air rocket under the direction of Tony Leavitt, a NASA Education Specialist. Of course, the main focus of the Prineville Reservoir Star Party is the night sky and viewing the stars through telescopes. This area is extremely dark at night and the Star Party staff members will be available with equipment to show you the wonders of the night sky including Saturn, some nebula and many other incredible sights that can be seen. The Prineville Reservoir State Park has developed a special astronomy area and owns a huge (16 inch) Newtonian telescope which will be available for viewing the night sky. Staff members and other guests will also share their equipment with you. They are proud of their instruments and love showing them off and giving others the opportunity to view the sky through them. If you have a telescope, bring it along. The guests and staff will make sure it is working right and will help you find some celestial wonders. |
